What to visit in Turin
Valentino Park
100 meters from the hotel there is the Valentino Park, the most famous and ancient public park in Turin. It is located in a splendid position along the left bank of the Po. The Valentino Park was first built in 1630, designed by Carlo Cognengo di Castellamonte, then continued until 1660 by his son Amedeo.
Inside the Park there is:
- The medieval village, built on the occasion of the Italian General Exhibition of 1884, is the reconstruction of a complete glimpse of the main architectural features of the Piedmontese Middle Ages.
- The Palazzina della Società Promotrice delle Belle Arti, built in 1842, is located to the right of the Valentino Castle and hosts temporary art exhibitions.
- The Torino Esposizioni Complex, home to prestigious events, also includes the Teatro Nuovo and the Palazzo del Ghiaccio.
- The Botanical Garden: Home of the Department of Plant Biology of the University of Turin. It is one of the main centers of study of Italian and international botany. The herbarium conserves 700,000 specimens (it is the second in Italy after the one in Florence).
- Villa Glicini is home to the Turin Fencing Club, where international foil, sabre and epee competitions are held annually; the first gymnastics club in Italy was founded here in 1844.
- The Valentino Castle
In recent years the park has been significantly redeveloped and is a destination, at sunset, for many jogging and cycling enthusiasts, as well as home to some aperitif bars and discos.
Palazzo Reale
Palazzo Reale is the first and most important of the Savoy residences in Piedmont, the scene of the politics of the Savoy kingdom for at least three centuries, the Royal Palace of Turin is located in the heart of the city, in the central Piazza Castello. It represents the heart of the Savoy court, symbol of the power of the dynasty. It is an integral part of the assets declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.
Venaria Reale
The Royal Palace of Venaria Reale is one of the largest Savoy residences in Piedmont. Probably the largest in size.
It includes the park and the historic village of Venaria, built in such a way as to form a sort of collar that directly recalls the Santissima Annunziata, symbol of the House of Savoy.
Palazzo Madama
Palazzo Madama and Casaforte degli Acaja is an architectural and historical complex located in the central Piazza Castello in Turin. The building houses the Museo Civico d’Arte Antica di Torino. It is a combination of two thousand years of Piedmont history: erected by the Romans as a city gate, Porta Decumana, for the side facing the Po River, the building first became a defensive system, then a real palace, a symbol of the power that Turin held until the 16th century, when the current Palazzo Reale was chosen as the seat of the Dukes of Savoy
